Northern

John Hammond

I am a consultant HPB & transplant surgeon in Newcastle. I chair the regional HPB MDT and run a busy outreach clinic in Middlesbrough. I am passionate about ensuring equity of access and improving quality of care for patients with benign and malignant HPB disease across the North of England. As a past AUGIS trainee representative, I recognise the key role AUGIS has in developing the next generation of upper GI surgeons, encouraging diversity within its workforce and ensuring sustainability in an often demanding speciality. I will work hard to support AUGIS and represent the region.

Summer Update

The North of England is a geographically large region with seven busy trusts delivering the spectrum of upper GI surgery. As a region we have an outstanding network of nurses and allied health professionals and in May 2024 we are running our first AUGIS North of England AHP study day, organised by our regional AHP representative Claire Taylor, with a theme of developing roles for AHPs in upper GI surgery and the assessment and management of frailty in our patient populations. In June 2024 we have our annual regional AUGIS training day for deanery trainees organised by our trainee representative Shiela Lee with a theme of emerging areas in Upper GI surgery, with speakers from across the North of England (and Yorkshire), followed by surgical skills training at Durham Cricket Ground. Later in the year we will be organising an evening to build the AUGIS consultant network and take the opportunity to explore how we can grow AUGIS membership and engagement in its sub-specialty groups across the region. I’ll also take this opportunity to advertise the excellent Royal College accredited cadaveric HPB and OG courses run throughout the year at the at Newcastle Surgical Training Centre.
