Summer Update

I have only very recently been appointed as Regional Representative for the West Midlands, taking over from my colleague Martin Wadley. I have a close affiliation with the West Midlands, graduating from the University of Birmingham and completing most of my basic and higher surgical training in the region. We are fortunate to have 12 major acute Trusts in the area providing the full breadth of secondary and tertiary Upper GI Services to our population and offering a wealth of training opportunities to trainees and senior post CCT Fellows.

We have several patient support groups in the area doing excellent work in supporting patients with OG cancer throughout their journey, raising general awareness, organising charity events, raising money and inviting patients to educational events. As an example of this, one of our Oesophageal cancer patients, Bill Byrne, organised a charity ball to raise awareness and funds for Oesophageal cancer. Amongst the items he auctioned for charity included a signed guitar by Queen’s Brian May. In total Bill raised £16,500 which he donated to the Trust for service improvements. I am sure there are many similar good deeds being performed around the country. I hope to provide you a much fuller report from the West Midlands next year.
